As Abia State marks 34 years of existence, the story of its journey reads like a tale of hope delayed, but not denied. Created on 27th August 1991 from the old Imo State by the then military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, Abia, fondly called “God’s Own State”, was born out of the desire to give its industrious people a platform for growth, dignity, and prosperity.

Over the decades, however, successive administrations, from the military era through the tenures of Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Ahamefule Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu, left citizens yearning for true transformation. The dreams of the founding fathers seemed caught in a cycle of infrastructural neglect, poor industrial growth, unpaid salaries, and corruption in governance.
But in 2023, the emergence of Dr. Alex Otti as governor signalled a decisive break from the past. Just over two years into his tenure, Abians are beginning to witness what many describe as a renaissance, an unfolding renewal that speaks directly to the aspirations of 1991.
Restoring Infrastructure
Governor Otti’s infrastructural drive has been nothing short of revolutionary. Roads that had long been abandoned have received renewal, while many are now receiving attention, with several projects breathing new life into all parts of the state. Strategic construction, modern drainage systems, and long-lasting road designs are turning eyesores into assets.
Placing Workers at the Centre
Unlike in previous years when civil servants bore the brunt of salary backlogs and pension arrears, Otti’s administration has made workers’ welfare a top priority. Prompt payment of salaries and pensions has restored dignity to labour and rekindled productivity in the public sector, while, like a magic, the backlog of salaries and pensions have been cleared.
Industrialisation through Innovation
The governor’s ongoing flagship project, the Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) in Owaza, Ukwa West, underscores his commitment to long-term economic transformation. Designed as a hub for energy, manufacturing, and technological advancement, the park promises thousands of jobs and a repositioning of Abia as an industrial force, not just in Nigeria, but in sub-Saharan Africa.
Markets of Global Standard
Abia, especially Aba, has long been known as a bustling commercial hub. Yet, its markets languished in poor conditions for decades. Governor Otti’s decision to remodel and upgrade them, starting with the Ekeoha-Aba Shopping Centre, is changing the narrative. Traders now anticipate markets that meet international standards, capable of attracting investors and lifting commerce to new heights.
Fighting Corruption and Wastage
Perhaps the most significant difference between Otti’s government and that of his predecessors lies in governance philosophy. By cutting wastage, blocking leakages, and insisting on transparency, he has restored trust in leadership. For many, this is the fulfilment of the long-desired dream of a government that truly serves its people.
A State Reborn
At 34, Abia stands at a historic crossroads. From years of decay, the state is now witnessing signs of renewal. Governor Alex Otti’s policies are not just tackling today’s problems, but also laying the groundwork for future generations. For the first time in decades, Abians both at home and abroad dare to believe that God’s Own State is on the cusp of becoming the model of progress its founding fathers envisioned.
