Suspected kidnappers dressed in military camouflage attacked a construction site in Nunya, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, on Saturday evening, July 12, 2025, killing a soldier and a driver employed by a Chinese engineering firm.
According to eyewitnesses, approximately six gunmen armed with assault rifles arrived at the site on three motorcycles around dusk. The attackers opened fire, killing the driver instantly and fatally shooting a soldier providing security, whose rifle was allegedly stolen before the assailants fled.

Sources suggest the attackers, believed to be part of a notorious kidnapping gang, may have crossed into Abia from a neighboring state. Unconfirmed reports indicate the attack was led by a suspected criminal with military training, currently at large.
Security forces responded promptly, launching a coordinated operation in the area. The deceased driver’s body was evacuated and taken to a hospital, and spent AK-47 shells were recovered at the scene. Following a tip-off, one suspect linked to the attack was arrested in a hideout in Umuahia North Local Government Area and is currently under interrogation. Efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects are ongoing.
As of press time, the Abia State Police Command has not issued an official statement, and attempts to contact DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, were unsuccessful. Security operations continue in Nunya as authorities work to track down the perpetrators and ensure justice is served.
