Abia State is gearing up to host two major International para badminton events: the inaugural Abia Para Badminton International and the All Africa Para Badminton Championships.

The championships, sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), will take place from September 30 to October 12, 2025, in Umuahia, the State Capital.

The Deputy Governor Engr Ikechukwu Emetu,FNSE who chairs the main Organizing Committee, described the events as a turning point in the state’s sports development and a celebration of inclusion, resilience, and International cooperation.

“Hosting these championships is more than a sporting achievement. It is a statement of our capacity, our hospitality, and our vision,” he said

The championships are expected to attract Officials and Sports enthusiasts from across Africa and around the world, with participation from over 224 athletes from 16 Countries. This influx is anticipated to boost Abia’s local economy, hospitality, tourism, and small businesses. The Deputy Governor highlighted the benefits of hosting the tournaments, including increased activity in the hospitality, tourism, and transport sectors, as well as inspiration to Abia youths

The Abia State Government has demonstrated its commitment to sports development, particularly para-badminton, by releasing funds for the successful hosting of the championship games. Governor Alex Otti’s administration has also approved the purchase of a specialized mobility bus for Abia athletes and procured cutting-edge para-badminton maintenance equipment, setting a new benchmark for Sports development in Africa.

The Badminton Federation of Nigeria and the Abia State Badminton Association are organizing the events in collaboration with the Abia State Government and the Ministry of Sports. The championships will provide a platform for para badminton players to showcase their skills and compete at an International level, promoting inclusivity and talent development.
