The Professional Designers and Manufacturers Association, Nigeria, Aba Branch, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Mayor of Aba South Local Government Area, Hon. Obialor Anyanwu, in an effort to secure government support and collaboration aimed at boosting their industry. The delegation, led by Comrade James Dims Ogbu and Secretary Deacon Anyanwu Hart, received a warm welcome from the Mayor.
Comrade James expressed his gratitude to the Mayor for his openness to the delegation. He introduced his team members, setting the stage for a constructive discussion. An address was presented to the Mayor, outlining the association’s aspirations and potential areas for partnership with the local government.

In his keynote address, Comrade James identified several critical areas for collaboration with the government. These include contracts related to fashion and design to expand their operations, support for improving their welfare, and addressing the challenge of multiple taxation, which they argued adversely affects their operations.
The Mayor warmly welcomed the delegation and acknowledged the vital role their work plays in the growth and development of Aba South, particularly in creating employment opportunities. In response to their requests, he highlighted the Abia Export Growth Lab, an initiative by Governor Alex Otti designed to ensure high-quality products and support for small and medium-sized businesses. He promised to facilitate the designers’ access to this hub, thereby opening avenues for growth and export opportunities. The Mayor encouraged the designers to explore and expand their production, aiming not only at the African continent but also at global markets. He emphasized the lucrative nature of the fashion and design sector, urging them to tap into its vast potential, assuring them of government support in feasible areas.

Regarding excessive taxation, the Mayor clarified that Ben Soft (Smart Airs) is the sole accredited tax collection company for the Aba South Local Government Area. He advised association members to verify the tax collection process and always obtain receipts for payments made. He underscored the significance of tax payments in supporting government functions while stressing the administration’s commitment to easing business operations instead of simply focusing on tax collection.
The Mayor expressed his disappointment that many Aba producers do not label their products as “Made in Aba.” He urged the designers to tag their products with pride to promote local identity and gain global recognition.

He also encouraged the group to participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration to become eligible voters, noting the relatively low turnout at the INEC office.
In his vote of thanks, Innocent Oche reaffirmed the association’s readiness to support the government and pledged to promote “Made in Aba” products.
Government officials present included Deputy Mayor Hon. Martins Azubuike Nwankwo, Secretary to the Local Government Hon. Gideon Adikwuru, and Supervisor for Information and Digital Economy Hon. Napoleon Elliot Ahuruonye.Aba South Media Unit*
