Abia workers begin indefinite strike in line with NLC directive

Civil servants in Abia State have complied with the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and embarked on industrial action. The strike commenced Tuesday morning, with most offices under lock and key. ASUU set to review Appeal Court’s ruling to decide on next action

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has said it would review the judgement of the Appeal Court that ordered the union to end its strike, to determine its next line of action. The appeal court on Friday ordered the union to return to work as earlier ordered by the National Industrial Court with immediate effect. In reaction to the fresh court judgement, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, said that the union is yet to officially receive the Appeal Court ruling. The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU to call off its strike. The court gave the order after dismissing the union’s application for a stay of execution of an earlier ruling of the National Industrial Court directing the university lecturers to resume work. Comrade Ben Ukpepi, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman in Cross River State, on Thursday, said that the take-home N30,000 national minimum wage no longer takes Nigerian workers home.
