Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District, has stirred political controversy after declaring that the Senate seat for Abia North is “not in contest” and warning those preparing to challenge him in 2027 to “wait until I’m done.”
The former Abia State Governor said, “Abia North senate seat is not in contest with anybody. I am not contesting with anybody. They should all wait till I finish before they come out. Which Senate are they going to, and what are they going to do that I am not doing? I am sincere with the people of Abia North, so they should all wait.”
The statement, which has sparked intense political discussion across the zone, is seen as a direct message to prominent figures rumored to be nursing senatorial ambitions — including Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha (Bourdex), former Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, and Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu, Chairman of the E.C.K Foundation and business magnate.
Political watchers describe Kalu’s declaration as both a show of confidence and a warning shot to any perceived challenger ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to sources close to the Senator, Kalu believes that his achievements and influence in the Senate have made him indispensable to the people of Abia North. His loyalists argue that the zone still needs his political experience and federal connections.
However, critics have accused the Senator of trying to “intimidate potential aspirants” and “shut the door of democracy” against credible contenders. Some party insiders argue that no position is a personal property and that every qualified Abia North son has a constitutional right to contest.
Meanwhile, supporters of Chief Bourdex, Ude Oko Chukwu, and Dr. Emeka Kalu have remained silent for now, describing Orji Kalu’s comments as “mere political noise.”
With the 2027 race still two years away, the political temperature in Abia North appears to be rising. Many believe that Kalu’s latest outburst could mark the beginning of a fierce battle for the soul of the zone — one that may redefine Abia North politics in the coming years.
