Joy, gratitude, and quiet tears of relief filled the air as Bishop Prof. Emeka Nwankpa held the 19th edition of his annual :Widows Must Smile’ empowerment scheme. About a thousand widows gathered at the cleric’s Umukalu Ntigha country home, many carrying months of pain, loss, and uncertainty, yet they left with renewed hope, comfort, and smiles on their faces.
Through his charity arm, the Bishop Emeka Nwankpa Foundation, the revered cleric reached out with compassion, providing food items, clothing, and other essential support packages carefully prepared to ease daily struggles and restore dignity. For many of the women, the gesture meant more than material support. It was a powerful reassurance that they had not been forgotten.

For over 18 years, Bishop Prof. Emeka Nwankpa has consistently devoted his life and resources to serving the underprivileged. His humanitarian vision has transformed countless lives across communities. At present, more than one hundred students are beneficiaries of the foundation’s scholarship scheme, receiving quality education across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. These are children whose dreams might otherwise have been cut short by poverty.
Beyond education, the Bishop Emeka Nwankpa Foundation continues to empower individuals through skills acquisition and vocational training. Many beneficiaries are taught practical self-employment skills, mentored, and eventually supported with start-up capital to establish small businesses and become self-reliant.
In moments where shelter was the greatest need, Bishop Prof. Nwankpa has also built homes for the homeless, offering not just roofs over their heads, but a renewed sense of security and belonging.
As the empowerment programme came to a close, emotions ran high. The widows lifted their voices in prayers of thanksgiving to God and poured out heartfelt words of appreciation to Bishop Prof. Emeka Nwankpa. Some spoke of how the initiative had become a lifeline they look forward to each year, while others described the Bishop as a father figure whose kindness has brought light into some of their darkest seasons.
True to its name, the Widows Must Smile empowerment scheme continues to turn grief into joy and despair into hope. Through unwavering compassion and selfless service, Bishop Prof. Emeka Nwankpa is not only meeting needs but healing hearts, restoring dignity, and reminding the world that love expressed through action still has the power to change lives, one widow, one family, and one smile at a time.
