The transformation of trade Unions in the modern era requires visionary leadership, strategic capacity building, and continuous investment in the development of members. For the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers’ Union (RATTAWU) of Nigeria, the administration of Comrade Prince Emeka Kalu, fondly known as Magic Fingers, has embraced this reality by prioritizing training and retraining as a cornerstone of the Union’s growth.
Under the guiding philosophy “Skills for Today, Opportunities for Tomorrow,” the leadership of President Kalu has embarked on a deliberate programme of empowering members through exposure, education, and leadership development. This initiative aligns with his vision of repositioning RATTAWU as a centre of excellence where professional competence, Union consciousness, and global best practices thrive.

RATTAWU itself represents workers in Nigeria’s media and cultural industries, bringing together professionals in broadcasting, theatre, and creative arts to promote welfare, professionalism, and collective bargaining within the sector.
In today’s rapidly evolving media and labour environment, technological changes, digital transformation, and evolving labour relations demand a workforce that is constantly learning and adapting. Recognising this, President Kalu has placed great emphasis on continuous training and retraining of members as a strategic tool for building a resilient and sustainable Union.
The administration believes that a Union can only remain relevant when its members are well-informed, well-trained, and capable of responding to the dynamic realities of the workplace.

Through this approach, training becomes more than a professional exercise, it becomes a pathway to strengthening leadership, improving productivity, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Union.
This vision reflects President Kalu’s broader agenda of transforming RATTAWU into a learning organisation where workshops, seminars, and leadership retreats serve as instruments for the development of members and the strengthening of Union structures.
One of the most significant achievements of the Kalu administration has been the active participation of RATTAWU members in international training platforms, particularly programmes organised by UNI Global, UNI Africa as an affiliate.
Members have been sent to mentoring and leadership workshops in Ghana, where they engage with Union leaders from across Africa. These programmes expose participants to modern trade Union strategies, leadership techniques, and effective organizing models that can be adapted to the Nigerian labour environment.
The UNI-Africa mentoring programmes provide participants with:
*Leadership and negotiation skills.
*Knowledge of international labour standards.
*Exposure to global Union solidarity and cooperation.
*Mentorship opportunities with experienced labour leaders.
Through such initiatives, RATTAWU members gain international perspectives that strengthen the Union’s capacity to operate effectively within the global labour movement.

Capacity Building at the Nigeria Labour Congress Harmattan School forms a critical component of the training agenda of President Kalu; the participation of members in programmes organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), particularly the renowned Harmattan and Rain schools, has served as one of the most important platforms for trade Union education in Nigeria. Thus, members of RATTAWU who participated in this programme received intensive training in:
*Trade Union leadership and administration.
*Workers’ organizing and mobilisation strategies.
*Collective bargaining and labour relations.
*Gender and Women issues in the labour movement.
Effective participation in this policy advocacy and social dialogue has
ensured that RATTAWU leaders and members acquire the intellectual and practical tools necessary to effectively represent workers and strengthen the Union’s structures at both national and workplace levels. Activities in the Harmattan and Rain Schools such as workshops have been acknowledged as important capacity-building platforms for Union members.
In addition to international and labour movement training programmes, RATTAWU members have also participated in capacity-building workshops organised by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
These workshops focus on strengthening social dialogue between government, employers, and labour Unions. Through participation in such programmes, RATTAWU representatives gain deeper insights into:
*Labour laws and industrial relations practices.
*Conflict resolution and dispute management.
*Occupational safety and workplace rights.
These engagements ensures that RATTAWU leaders are equipped to effectively defend the interests of members while contributing meaningfully to national labour discourse.
One of the most commendable aspects of President Kalu’s leadership is his determination to pursue capacity building despite limited resources. Recognising that union finances are often constrained, he has adopted innovative strategies to ensure that RATTAWU is not left behind in the ongoing transformation of labour organisations.
Through strategic partnerships with training institutions and labour organisations, the Kalu administration has been able to expand opportunities for members without placing excessive financial burden on the Union.
This commitment reflects the President’s foresight and dedication to ensuring that RATTAWU keeps pace with emerging global trends in labour education and professional development.
The emphasis on training and leadership development is deeply rooted in the Twelve-Point Mission Statement of President Kalu’s administration. The manifesto envisions a Union whose members are exposed, enlightened, highly professional, and self-reliant, thereby restoring RATTAWU’s integrity and prestige within the Nigerian labour movement.
By investing in human capital development, the administration is laying a solid foundation for a new era of sustainable Union development, where members are not only beneficiaries of Union representation but also active contributors to the growth and relevance of the organisation.
In conclusion,
the leadership of President Prince Emeka Kalu (Magic Fingers) has demonstrated that the future of RATTAWU lies in empowering its members with knowledge, skills, and global exposure. Through participation in international mentoring programmes, capacity-building initiatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress, and workshops organised by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Union is steadily building a new generation of informed and capable labour leaders.
The philosophy of “Skills for Today, Opportunities for Tomorrow” therefore captures the essence of this transformation. It reflects a forward-looking vision where training becomes the bridge between present challenges and future opportunities.
With continued commitment to capacity building, RATTAWU under President Kalu is positioning itself not only as a defender of workers’ rights but also as a dynamic and progressive Union ready to meet the demands of a changing world.
