The Abia State Government has handed over a newly built two-bedroom bungalow to Mrs. Grace Kalu, a widow from Amaekpu, Ohafia Local Government Area, as part of its intervention for vulnerable residents.
The house, located at Ndi Nnachi Compound, Amaekpu Ohafia, was constructed through the state Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection with support from the member representing Ohafia South State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chief Kalu Mba Nwoke (Etiokwe).
The official commissioning and handover ceremony was held on Friday in the community.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, warned relatives and other unauthorised persons against attempting to take possession of the property or interfering with the beneficiary.
“Anyone thinking about taking over this building or meddling with the beneficiary should back off. The government will not hesitate to take action against such individuals,” Emetu cautioned.
The Deputy Governor said the building was provided specifically for Mrs. Kalu and her children and should remain their home.
He also commended residents of Amoba Section, Amaekpu, for turning out despite the rain, saying their presence demonstrated support for the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti.
“Your presence here, even in the rain, shows your love for Governor Alex Otti and your appreciation for his good work. I encourage you to keep supporting and praying for him,” he said.
Emetu further urged eligible residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards when available and participate actively in the electoral process. He also called for continued support for the Labour Party.
Earlier, Kalu Mba Nwoke said he had approached Governor Otti to seek assistance for the widow through the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.
According to the lawmaker, the Governor approved the request and funds were subsequently released for the construction of the bungalow.
He stressed that the property belonged to Mrs. Kalu and her children and should not be taken over by relatives or outsiders.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Ngozi Felix Blessing, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Elder Mrs. Uchechukwu Kalu, said the intervention reflected the ministry’s responsibility to support vulnerable and less-privileged members of society.
She commended the state government for the intervention and urged residents to make use of their PVCs in sustaining good governance.
The Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Hon. Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, also thanked Governor Otti for what he described as his continued support for the community, particularly in responding to urgent needs.
The Regent Ezieogo of Amaekpu Community, Ezieogo Engr. Chief Awa Nwankwo, expressed appreciation to the state government and Kalu Mba Nwoke for providing the widow and her children with a secure home.
For Mrs. Grace Kalu, the handover brought relief after what she described as a difficult period for her family.
Speaking on behalf of herself and her children, the beneficiary thanked God, Governor Otti, Deputy Governor Emetu and Kalu Mba Nwoke for the intervention, saying the new home had turned her family’s experience of homelessness into joy.
She also prayed for God’s blessings upon those who contributed to the project.
The ceremony was attended by the former Mayor of Ohafia LGA, Hon. Engr. John Eke; Ohafia LGA councillors led by the Leader, Rt. Hon. Anyim A. Anyim; Labour Party members, clergy, traditional and community leaders, among others.
