Renowned human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, announced his departure from Nigeria to the United States to reunite with his family after enduring four years of incarceration under the former President Muhammadu Buhari regime.
Sowore, who had been detained since August 2019, revealed his intention on social media, citing his unlawful detention and trumped-up charges by the Nigerian government as reasons for his decision to leave the country.
Arrested for organizing the #RevolutionNow protest, Sowore faced charges of treasonable felony by the Buhari administration, enduring assaults, torture, and restrictions on seeing his family during his incarceration.
Despite his ordeal, Sowore affirmed his commitment to fighting for an egalitarian society and holding Nigerian leaders accountable, emphasizing that his resolve remains unshaken.
Highlighting Nigeria’s challenges of corruption and rising inflation, Sowore reiterated his dedication to the struggle for Nigeria’s restoration, asserting that he will return to continue advocating for the people’s liberation.
While planning a short trip to reunite with his family, Sowore pledged to confront the numerous legal cases against him upon his return, indicating his determination to face the remaining charges head-on.
The withdrawal of a lawsuit against Sowore by President Bola Tinubu’s government and the court’s directive to release his seized passport marked recent developments in his legal battles, reflecting the ongoing saga of Sowore’s fight against oppression and injustice in Nigeria.
