Accra, Ghana – Today, the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, in collaboration with the Government of Ghana, hosted the fourth edition of the #GEJDemocracyDialogue, focusing on the theme “Why Democracies Die.” The high-profile event brought together former and current African leaders, diplomats, civil society representatives, and thought leaders to reflect on the future of democracy across the continent.

Distinguished guests included H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of Ghana, H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and H.E. Kadre Désiré Ouédraogo. Their contributions, alongside those of other participants, sparked insightful conversations about the importance of democracy in nation-building and the unique challenges African democracies face, such as political instability, weak institutions, and threats to civil liberties.
Throughout the day, speakers emphasized the need for inclusive governance, respect for the rule of law, and the active participation of citizens in democratic processes. Discussions also highlighted lessons learned from past experiences and proposed pathways to strengthen democratic institutions, promote peace, and ensure justice in African nations.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana and all participants, stating, “Together, let us commit to safeguarding democracy as the surest path to peace, security, and prosperity across Africa.” The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment from all attendees to work collaboratively in defending and advancing democracy on the continent.
The #GEJDemocracyDialogue continues to serve as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and fostering partnerships aimed at building stronger, more resilient democracies in Africa.
