As conversations around Artificial Intelligence (AI) continue to reshape workplaces across the globe, President of the Radio, Television and Theatre Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), Emeka Kalu, has assured workers that the emerging technology should not be viewed as a threat but as an opportunity for growth and increased productivity.
Speaking at the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, Kalu said workers in the media, broadcasting and creative sectors have consistently adapted to technological advancements and are capable of leveraging AI to improve efficiency and professional output.

He emphasized that the future belongs to workers who embrace continuous learning, noting that training, retraining and upskilling remain critical in ensuring that employees remain relevant in an increasingly technology-driven world.
According to the RATTAWU President, the media industry has long embraced digital transformation and is already positioning its workforce to maximize the benefits of AI-powered innovations rather than fear displacement.
Kalu further reaffirmed RATTAWU’s commitment to the welfare of media and cultural workers, expressing confidence that the proposed special salary structure and enhanced welfare package for the sector would receive favourable government consideration.
He added that affordable housing schemes and other worker-focused initiatives remain key priorities of his administration as the union continues to pursue improved living and working conditions for its members.
The labour leader’s remarks come amid growing global debates over the impact of Artificial Intelligence on employment, with experts increasingly advocating skills development as the most effective response to technological disruption.
The conversation is no longer about whether AI will change the workplace, but whether workers are prepared to evolve with it. For RATTAWU, the answer lies in continuous learning, innovation and stronger welfare support.
