Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has called on Nigerians, particularly commuters, transport operators and residents who depend on the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway, to remain calm, patient and confident as the Federal Government moves to urgently restore the major highway to acceptable standards.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, in a statement dated August 27, 2026, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift intervention and directive aimed at addressing the deplorable condition of the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway.
Ohanaeze described the road as a major national transportation corridor linking the South-South, Southeast and other parts of Nigeria, stressing that it plays a vital role in the movement of people, agricultural produce, industrial goods and commercial activities across the country.
The organisation acknowledged the hardship motorists and transport operators have endured as a result of the prolonged condition of the highway, including delays, traffic congestion, vehicle damage and increased travel difficulties.
According to Ohanaeze, these concerns are genuine and deserve the urgent and responsible attention they are currently receiving from the Federal Government.
The organisation also commended the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, for his prompt response, personal inspection and practical engagement following President Tinubu’s directive.
Ohanaeze specifically noted Umahi’s on-site assessment of the Benin–Asaba corridor on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, describing the inspection as a demonstration of the seriousness, commitment and urgency being attached to resolving the challenges confronting road users.
The organisation described Senator Umahi as a disciplined, courageous and performance-driven administrator who places accountability, quality and timely delivery at the centre of infrastructure development.
It said the Minister’s firm approach to project supervision and insistence that contractors meet agreed standards have reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government is determined to achieve a lasting solution to the problems confronting the highway.
However, Ohanaeze urged the Ministry of Works to conduct a comprehensive review of the capacity, competence and performance of contractors operating under the existing concession arrangements.
The organisation said Nigerians expect a thorough assessment of the level and quality of work being delivered, particularly because, despite the presence of construction equipment on the highway, the pace of progress must correspond with the urgency, resources and national importance attached to the project.
Ohanaeze further maintained that any contractor found incapable of delivering quality work within the required timeframe should face appropriate contractual consequences.
It stressed that national infrastructure projects of such magnitude must not be subjected to unnecessary delays, inefficiency or inadequate performance.
The organisation expressed confidence that Senator Umahi’s reputation as a strict enforcer of standards and a Minister committed to results would ensure that every necessary measure is taken to protect the interest of Nigerians.
It also pointed to Umahi’s demonstrated commitment to personally monitoring projects and demanding accountability from contractors as a positive assurance that President Tinubu’s directive will be fully implemented.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide therefore appealed to all Nigerians and road users to exercise patience and maintain confidence in the ongoing intervention.
The organisation said the Federal Government had listened to the concerns of the people and expressed confidence that the combined determination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Dave Umahi would ensure that the Benin–Agbor–Asaba Expressway receives the urgent attention required to improve safety, efficiency and durability.
