As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the President of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), Comrade Prince Emeka Kalu, popularly known as “Magic Fingers,” has called for renewed efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, promote accountability in governance, and improve the welfare of Nigerian workers.
Kalu said Democracy Day offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, celebrate its achievements, and recommit to the principles of justice, equity, transparency, and good governance.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the RATTAWU President acknowledged the progress Nigeria has made in sustaining democratic governance over the years but noted that several challenges still pose significant threats to national development and the well-being of citizens.
He identified the worsening security situation across parts of the country as one of the major obstacles confronting Nigeria’s growth, stressing that insecurity continues to undermine economic activities, productivity, service delivery, and social stability.
According to him, the persistent security challenges have disrupted businesses, displaced communities, increased the cost of living, and created uncertainty for both workers and employers.
“No nation can achieve its full developmental potential in an atmosphere where citizens live in fear and productive activities are constantly under threat,” he said.
Kalu urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts towards tackling insecurity through improved intelligence gathering, stronger community engagement, adequate support for security agencies, and policies that address the root causes of violence and criminality.
The labour leader also stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, describing them as the foundation of every successful democracy. He noted that effective institutions are critical to ensuring transparency, protecting citizens’ rights, promoting justice, and driving sustainable national development.
He called on public office holders and government agencies to uphold the principles of accountability, integrity, and service, insisting that democracy can only thrive when institutions remain responsive to the needs of the people.
Speaking further, Kalu underscored the vital role workers play in sustaining democracy and national development. He therefore urged policymakers to prioritise workers’ welfare through improved working conditions, fair remuneration, capacity development programmes, and policies that stimulate job creation and economic growth.
While congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, the RATTAWU President reaffirmed the union’s commitment to promoting democratic values, social justice, industrial harmony, and the protection of workers’ rights.
He also called on Nigerians to remain united, patriotic, and committed to building a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic nation where every citizen can contribute meaningfully to national development.
The statement was signed by the National Publicity Secretary of RATTAWU, Comrade Izang Francis Atsen
