The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, has congratulated the Diocese of Umuahia, Anglican Communion, and the entire congregation of St. John’s Church Parish, Itaja/Amuzu, on the church’s centenary anniversary and the dedication of its new church auditorium, vicarage, choir stall and band.
Emetu, who represented the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, at the historic celebration, described the attainment of 100 years as a remarkable milestone reflecting the faith, sacrifice, unity and perseverance of generations of Christians who contributed to the growth and development of the church.
Speaking during the thanksgiving and dedication service, the Deputy Governor said the centenary provided an opportunity to thank Almighty God for His unwavering faithfulness and honour the legacy of those who laid the foundation of the church.
“Celebrating a hundred years is truly an incredible achievement. It showcases the faith, sacrifice, unity, and perseverance of countless generations,” he remarked.
He described the newly dedicated church auditorium and vicarage as powerful symbols of the congregation’s steadfast commitment to the Christian faith, praying that the auditorium would serve as a sanctuary where souls are saved, lives are transformed and the weary find comfort.
He further prayed that the vicarage would become a haven of peace, strength and renewal for the clergy entrusted with guiding the spiritual journey of the congregation.
Emetu reiterated the commitment of the Abia State Government to constructive partnerships with faith-based organisations and other stakeholders in promoting peace, development and social cohesion across the state.
According to him, the Church has an important role to play in shaping moral values, fostering peace, supporting education and contributing to community development.
“While the government focuses on building infrastructure, the Church nurtures the character and spirit of our society.”
The Deputy Governor commended the Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Obijuru Ibeabuchi, the clergy, church leaders, parishioners and the building committee for their dedication, sacrifice and hard work which culminated in the successful completion of the projects.
He encouraged the congregation to remain steadfast in their faith and continue supporting initiatives aimed at building a peaceful, prosperous and united Abia State.
Emetu also urged citizens to remain actively involved in the democratic process and fulfil their civic responsibilities as the state and nation prepare for the forthcoming elections.
He wished St. John’s Church Parish continued growth, deeper faith and greater impact as it begins another century of Christian witness and service.
Earlier, Sir Ken Nwosu, Chief Security Officer of the Abia State Government House and a member of the church, warmly welcomed the Deputy Governor and other distinguished guests, expressing appreciation for their presence and support during the centenary celebration.
In his sermon, Bishop Ibeabuchi charged Christians to remain steadfast in their faith and committed to the service of God, drawing his central message from 1 Corinthians 15:58.
The historic celebration featured a thanksgiving service and dedication of the new church auditorium, vicarage, choir stall and band, as well as the confirmation and admission of new members into various church organisations.
The event attracted prominent dignitaries, including Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, who served as Chairman of the occasion; Rt. Hon. Augustine Okezie Meregini, Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, alongside his colleagues; Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, Secretary to the Abia State Government; members of the State Executive Council; other senior government officials; community leaders; clergy and parishioners.
