Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, on Monday joined Igbo leaders, statesmen, traditional rulers, business leaders and other stakeholders at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, for the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide Igbo Day Lecture and Dinner.
The event, which centred on the theme, “The Igbo Charter and Development of Ala Igbo,” provided a platform for discussions on the economic, social and developmental future of the South-East.
The gathering attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, members of the clergy, business moguls and representatives of various socio-cultural organisations from across the country.
One of the major talking points of the event was the need for the South-East to adapt to changing global economic realities.
Speaking at the occasion, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, outlined his administration’s emerging economic direction for the state, with emphasis on moving beyond traditional trading towards manufacturing, digital commerce and technology-driven enterprises.
Otti urged Ndigbo at home and in the diaspora to take advantage of digital tools, innovation and emerging technologies while strengthening local production as a pathway to sustainable wealth creation.
According to the Governor, the changing nature of global commerce requires individuals, businesses and communities to rethink traditional approaches and position themselves for opportunities created by the digital economy.
The lecture also featured a keynote presentation by Professor Kingsley Moghalu, delivered virtually, in which he examined the Igbo Charter as a non-partisan development roadmap capable of helping unlock the economic potential of the South-East.
Discussions at the gathering also touched on enterprise development, technology, cultural preservation, investment mobilisation, regional security and broader development of Ala Igbo.
Deputy Governor Emetu’s participation further underscored the Abia State Government’s engagement with conversations around the economic transformation of the South-East and the need to prepare the state and its people for a technology-driven future.
The administration of Governor Otti has continued to place emphasis on economic transformation, innovation and opportunities that can position Abia for greater participation in the modern economy.
The Ohanaeze Igbo Day Lecture therefore provided another platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas on how the region can harness its entrepreneurial strength, human capital and emerging technologies towards sustainable development.
