On Tuesday 14th October, the House of Representatives received the Report of the Committee on Health Institutions on the Federal Medical Centre Ohafia (Establishment) Bill, HB.257, sponsored by Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.
This marks a major step forward in establishing a Federal Medical Centre in Ohafia, Abia State. The Bill had earlier passed its second reading and was referred to the Committee on Health Institutions for detailed review and public input. The Committee’s report, now presented to the House, confirms that the Bill has undergone full legislative examination and amendment.

A Federal Medical Centre in Ohafia would bring wide-ranging benefits to the community and neighbouring areas. Beyond improving access to quality healthcare, it would create new jobs for medical professionals, administrative staff, and local contractors. The centre would also attract small businesses such as pharmacies, food vendors, and housing providers, stimulating economic activity across the constituency.
In the long term, a large hospital of this kind would help retain medical talent, reduce travel costs for patients seeking specialist care, and support community growth through steady employment and improved health outcomes.
The Bill now moves to the Report Stage and then to its Third Reading, the final step before passage in the House.
