The Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, joined the people of Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom for Orie Ekpe Ebem Ukwu, the high point of the 2026 Iri Ji/Igba Ekpe Annual New Yam Festival, held on Saturday, 26th September 2026.
The celebration, marked by cultural displays, masquerade performances and the traditional rites associated with the new yam, drew sons and daughters of Ebem from across the country and the diaspora.
The festival was announced by the Paramount Ruler of Ebem Ohafia Ancient Kingdom and Kpoke I of Ekeluogo Ebem Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Ukoha Kalu Ukoha, JP, following consultations with the traditional yam barons, Ndi Ezie Ji, and the Ezie Ebem-in-Council.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon. Osonwa paid his respects to the traditional institution and described the festival as an enduring expression of the identity of the people, noting that the marking of the harvest predates the formation of the country itself.
He commended all who travelled home for the celebration, and extended his appreciation to the Ebem Ohafia Development Union for its efforts towards a peaceful and successful festival.
The lawmaker prayed for peace, health and increase for every household in the community.
