The House of Representatives Sub-Committee on Seized, Forfeited and Recovered Assets, chaired by Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, on Tuesday held an investigative hearing with key anti-corruption and security agencies on how seized, forfeited and recovered assets are managed.
Agencies at the hearing included the EFCC, ICPC, NDLEA, NAPTIP and the Nigerian Navy, among others. They were represented by Muhammad H. Joda (Secretary, EFCC), George J. Lawal (Acting Director, POCMD, ICPC), Shadrach Haruna (Acting Secretary, NDLEA), Abosede Iheabunike (Deputy Director, NAPTIP) and Capt. A.A. Yabo (Defence Liaison, National Assembly, Nigerian Navy).
Chairing the session, Hon. Osonwa said the exercise was in line with the mandate of the House to ensure transparency, accountability and proper use of assets recovered from economic and financial crimes, drug-related offences and other illegal activities.
He said Nigerians deserve to know the current status, location and value of every seized and forfeited asset, and how recovered proceeds are being remitted and used for national development.
The Sub-Committee asked the agencies for detailed inventories, valuation reports and evidence of due process in the disposal of assets.
Hon. Osonwa reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th House of Representatives under Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas to block leakages, strengthen anti-corruption institutions and ensure that recovered assets work for Nigerians.
The hearing continues, with more agencies expected to appear.
