Leadership is not measured by noise or propaganda, but by tangible results that touch the lives of the people. In just three years in office, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, has demonstrated that effective representation is possible when commitment meets competence.
Since assuming office in June 2023, Hon. Osonwa has shown a rare blend of legislative brilliance and grassroots development.
A Legislator With A National Voice
In the Green Chamber, Hon. Osonwa is not a benchwarmer. As Deputy Chairman, House Committee on FCT Judiciary, he has sponsored critical bills, including the Federal Medical Centre Ohafia (Establishment) Bill, aimed at bringing quality tertiary healthcare closer to his constituents.
He has also sponsored the Freight Forwarding Bill, the State Policing Bill, and the Bill for a transition from the Presidential to the Parliamentary System. He co-sponsored the South-East Development Commission Bill, which has now become law.
His motions have consistently addressed issues affecting vulnerable citizens and communities, including insecurity, the abduction of schoolchildren, attacks on schools and worship centres, erosion, and boundary disputes affecting Arochukwu/Ohafia communities.
An Unprecedented Scorecard At Home
What sets Hon. Osonwa apart is that his work is visible across the various clans of the constituency.
1. Education Revolution:
He delivered Abia’s first Smart School through the transformation of Ofali Agwu School, Amaekpu, into a technology-driven learning centre with stable power.
He also reconstructed and furnished classroom blocks at Abia Community School, Ukwa Primary School, Nkporo, and Abam High School.
Through a transparent, ward-level merit examination, 200 students are now benefiting from full tertiary scholarships.
2. Water And Light:
For the people of Umuye Ihechiowa, a 24-year wait for clean water ended with the provision of a solar-powered borehole — the first in the community’s history.
Similar boreholes in Ugwuakuma and Okon Aku, alongside solar streetlights across Arochukwu, Ohafia, Abam and Nkporo, have improved security and extended productive activities into the night.
3. Roads And Access:
The construction of the Mgbaga–Federal High Court Road in Ebem and Ibina Ihenta Road, alongside the deployment of two road graders and a payloader to open up rural farm roads, has improved access and connected farmers to markets.
4. Empowerment That Creates Wealth, Not Dependency:
In what constituents describe as the largest empowerment programme in the constituency’s history, more than 500 people selected from over 15,000 applicants received motorcycles, mini-buses, tricycle trucks, sewing machines, refrigerators, generators and grinding machines.
More than 200 youths and women were trained in agro-allied businesses and provided with start-up grants, while over 30,000 high-yield seedlings, grains and fertilisers were distributed to farmers.
This is not handout politics. It is empowerment aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods.
A Promise Keeper
As Prince Emmanuel Ndukwe of Ohafia said:
“He promised to prioritize women and youths by helping them earn a living instead of giving handouts. Today you can see what he is doing.”
Hon. Osonwa himself says:
“The office is not mine; it is your office, and I am just sitting on it.”
That humility and accessibility, according to supporters, have continued to endear him to traditional rulers, teachers, farmers and youths across the eight clans.
Arochukwu/Ohafia has seen what quality representation looks like. The call across the constituency is clear: continuity for more impact.
