By Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu
As a concerned Nigerian and a staunch advocate of good governance, I feel compelled to speak on an issue of utmost importance to the future of our democracy. Today, I address the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the distinguished members of the National Assembly, urging them to take immediate and corrective action regarding a critical matter that threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.

Democracy, as we know, is not sustained merely by the conduct of elections. It requires a framework built on credible laws, transparent processes, and, above all, the trust of the people. Unfortunately, a lacuna created in the recent amendment of the Electoral Act has raised serious concerns about the future of our electoral process.
This gap in the law cannot be ignored, especially as we approach the 2027 general elections. The National Assembly must urgently address this issue while there is still time, ensuring that every provision in the Electoral Act is clear, fair, and aligned with the will of the people.
Nigeria can ill afford any legal ambiguities that might undermine the integrity of the electoral process or create avenues for manipulation. At this crucial juncture in our democratic journey, it is imperative that all laws governing elections be beyond reproach—transparent, fair, and firmly rooted in the principle of one person, one vote.
Let me be crystal clear: Nigerians will not tolerate any attempt to manipulate the electoral process or suppress the will of the electorate. The painful lessons learned from the 2023 general elections are still fresh in our minds, and the nation will not stand idly by while its democracy is compromised.
This is not a threat, but a call for responsibility and caution. The National Assembly has a unique opportunity to strengthen public confidence in our electoral system by acting swiftly to rectify the gaps in the Electoral Act. By doing so, they can ensure that Nigeria’s democracy remains robust, fair, and reflective of the true will of the people.
The eyes of history are upon us. The choices made today will have a lasting impact on the future of our nation. I implore the Senate to act with the courage, wisdom, and patriotism that the moment demands. Let us ensure that Nigeria’s elections are determined solely by the ballot and by the freely expressed will of the people.
This is the democracy that Nigeria deserves. This is the future we must safeguard.
Thank you.
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
