Nigeria is set to benefit from an additional 5 megawatts (MW) of solar energy capacity as part of ongoing efforts to expand access to reliable electricity across the country.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this on Wednesday during the inauguration of a 504-kilowatt interconnected mini-grid project in Epe, Lagos State.

According to the minister, the new solar energy deployment will be facilitated through the Rural Electrification Agency and is aimed at strengthening power supply in Epe and surrounding economic hubs.
Tegbe explained that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme, which seeks to enhance electricity access through renewable energy solutions. He noted that the programme is among the most innovative clean energy interventions currently being implemented in the country.
The minister further emphasized that decentralized renewable energy systems can effectively complement Nigeria’s existing electricity distribution infrastructure, helping to improve power reliability and support economic activities in underserved communities.
He stated that the newly commissioned 504kW mini-grid represents another significant step toward delivering sustainable and dependable electricity for productive use.
Tegbe also revealed that the agency is already advancing plans to deploy an additional 5MW of renewable energy capacity within Epe and neighboring commercial clusters, citing the area’s growing economic potential and increasing demand for stable electricity.
The development is expected to bolster local businesses, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to Nigeria’s broader goal of expanding access to clean and sustainable energy.
