The House of Representatives has passed a motion calling for the introduction of mandatory drug testing for secondary school students across Nigeria. Initiated by Moshood Oshun (APC-Lagos), the motion highlights adolescence as a critical period susceptible to various influences, including experimental curiosity and peer pressure.

Oshun emphasized the importance of youth in national development and expressed concern over the rising prevalence of substance abuse among them. Citing studies, he noted that one in every four students aged 15 to 19 in Nigeria engages in substance abuse, with codeine-containing syrup and tramadol being the most commonly abused drugs.

The motion advocates for the implementation of random student drug testing (RSDT) as a preventive measure aimed at deterring drug use and identifying students in need of assistance to remain drug-free. Oshun clarified that the objective of mandatory drug testing is not punitive but preventive, emphasizing the importance of early intervention to combat substance abuse effectively.

The House urged collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health to develop the mandatory drug testing framework. Additionally, it called upon the National Orientation Agency and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to intensify awareness campaigns on substance abuse among secondary school students nationwide.

To ensure compliance, the House mandated its Committees on Basic Education and Services and Healthcare Services to oversee the implementation of the mandatory drug testing policy and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

The House of Representatives’ decision reflects a proactive approach to address the growing issue of substance abuse among secondary school students in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and early intervention to safeguard the well-being of the youth and promote national development.
