The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ondo staged a street demonstration in Akure, calling on President Bola Tinubu to implement measures to alleviate historic hardship in the country. Led by NLC Chair Victor Amoko, protesters marched from the NLC secretariat to the governor’s office, demanding action to address the high cost of living and inflation.

Amoko emphasized the need for the government to reject IMF and World Bank policies, advocating instead for taxing the rich and subsidizing the poor. He also urged the fixing of local refineries and an end to subsidy, along with a halt to increases in school fees.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by Head of Service Kayode Ogundele, acknowledged the plight of the masses and assured the protesters that the government took their concerns seriously. Aiyedatiwa highlighted proactive steps taken by the government to reduce hardship, including clearing arrears of workers and planning to roll out Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses across the state.

Aiyedatiwa noted Ondo’s commitment to paying N35,000 wage awards to workers and pledged to continue providing welfare incentives to support the workforce. He assured that the government would prioritize the well-being of its citizens amid economic challenges.
