OHANAEZE NDIGBO WORLDWIDE – OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
“STARMER’S RESIGNATION: TINUBU REMAINS STEADFAST AS SOUTHEAST INFRASTRUCTURAL TRANSFORMATION DEEPENS — OHANAEZE NDIGBO REJECTS CALLS FOR PRESIDENT TINUBU’S RESIGNATION AND CAUTIONS MR. PETER OBI”
Date: 22 June 2026
INTRODUCTION
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has taken cognisance of recent public commentary attributed to the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, in which he allegedly called for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following political developments in the United Kingdom involving the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide issues this statement to clearly articulate its position on the matter, reaffirm its institutional stance on national unity, and address issues relating to governance, development, and political responsibility.
ON MR. PETER OBI’S PUBLIC STATEMENT
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide considers Mr. Peter Obi’s comparison and subsequent call for resignation as misplaced, politically inappropriate, and lacking contextual equivalence.
While affirming his constitutional right to freedom of expression, the organisation stresses that such statements do not reflect the collective will, political direction, or strategic interests of the Igbo nation or the Southeast geopolitical zone.
Accordingly, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide unequivocally dissociates the Igbo nation from the call for the resignation of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide acknowledges ongoing federal interventions in infrastructure development across the country, with particular attention to the Southeast region.
The organisation recognises the efforts of the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, whose role in the execution and supervision of federal road projects has contributed to improved connectivity and renewed investor confidence across the region.
ON KEY INFRASTRUCTURAL PROJECTS
The organisation notes with cautious optimism the continued advancement of several strategic infrastructure initiatives, including:
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway;
The Badagry-Sokoto Highway Corridor; and
The broader Trans-African Highway Integration Framework.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide affirms that sustained infrastructural investment remains central to national integration, economic expansion, and regional equity.
ON ECONOMIC INDICATORS AND MACROECONOMIC STABILITY
The organisation further acknowledges reported improvements in Nigeria’s external reserves, estimated at approximately $50.81 billion, attributed to fiscal reforms, enhanced diaspora remittances, and improved oil revenue performance.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide notes that such indicators, if sustained, may strengthen macroeconomic stability, support currency performance, and enhance investor confidence.
ON SOUTHEAST SECURITY AND STABILITY
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide recognises relative improvements in security conditions across parts of the Southeast, resulting in increased commercial activity, social reintegration, and the gradual restoration of public life.
The organisation encourages sustained collaboration between the Federal Government and regional stakeholders to consolidate peace and prevent a relapse into insecurity.
ON NATIONAL UNITY AND POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY
The organisation reiterates that Nigeria’s democratic stability depends on responsible leadership, disciplined public commentary, and the avoidance of rhetoric capable of heightening political tension.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide calls on all political actors, particularly those of national prominence, to exercise restraint, promote dialogue, and prioritise national cohesion over partisan positioning.
FINAL POSITION
In conclusion, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide hereby:
Dissociates the Igbo nation from calls for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu;
Reaffirms its recognition of ongoing federal infrastructure interventions in the Southeast;
Commends efforts aimed at improving national economic indicators and regional stability;
Urges political actors to uphold decorum, maturity, and national responsibility in public discourse; and
Reaffirms its commitment to constructive engagement with the Federal Government in the interest of national development.
