The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, , has declared that the realization of an Igbo presidency in 2027 would not be feasible under the platform of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which it described as a regional Ijaw-led political party.
In a press statement jointly signed by and , the organization urged former Anambra State Governor, , to reconsider any plan to contest the 2027 presidential election under the NDC platform.
Ohanaeze stated that after what it described as a “thorough and objective assessment” of Nigeria’s political environment, it concluded that the NDC currently lacks the national spread, acceptance, and structural strength required to effectively challenge the ruling .
According to the statement, the NDC is “largely driven by the political interests of the Ijaw nation under the leadership of Senator Seriake Dickson,” making it difficult for the party to build the broad national coalition necessary for a successful presidential campaign.
The group emphasized that the realization of an Igbo presidency requires a political platform with national appeal, broad-based support across Nigeria, and the capacity to secure majority confidence nationwide.
“A regional party is ill-equipped to navigate Nigeria’s complex and highly competitive electoral environment,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze further warned that a presidential contest under the NDC could result in political defeat and weaken the Southeast’s bargaining power at the national level.
The organization also referenced the inaugural meeting of the Forum of Former Southeast Governors held in Enugu, where, according to the statement, the governors acknowledged the infrastructural efforts of President in the Southeast and endorsed his re-election bid as their consensus choice.
The statement added that, in the interest of regional development and the political future of the Igbo nation, Peter Obi should withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support President Tinubu’s re-election.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, Isiguzoro and Ohia maintained that the advice was necessary to protect the Southeast’s political relevance and developmental interests ahead of the next general election.
