In the build-up to the 2023 general elections, a political wave swept across Abia State, a wave powered by hope, reform, and the collective resolve of the people to chart a new course. The people voted overwhelmingly for candidates of the Labour Party at all levels, signalling a clear rejection of the old order.

Among those who rode on that wave of popular mandate was Engr. Chinedu Onyeizu, an MIT Sloan Fellow and Harvard-trained technocrat whose pedigree inspired confidence across Abia South. A seasoned petroleum engineer, Onyeizu brought with him a wealth of experience from his distinguished career with PTDF and Chevron, coupled with a vision for purposeful and people-centred representation.
The people of Abia South – from Aba to Obingwa, and from Ugwunagbo to Ukwa – spoke loudly at the polls. They entrusted him with their mandate, convinced of his competence, capacity, and commitment to delivering quality representation. However, what should have been a triumph of democracy was tragically subverted.
Through a series of underhand practices and manipulations, that freely-given mandate was denied. In a twist that still troubles the conscience of many, a candidate who was roundly rejected at the polls was declared winner by the electoral body, and affirmed by the judiciary.
The consequence of that injustice is glaring today. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who emerged from that controversial process, presides over what many describe as one of the poorest representations the senatorial district has ever witnessed. The gap between expectation and performance has only deepened the sense of loss among the people – loss of opportunity, loss of progress, and loss of effective advocacy at the national level.
Today, as events unfold in the Senate, particularly the controversy surrounding Senator Abaribe’s defection, many observers cannot help but see a poetic symmetry. What is playing out appears, to some, as karma in motion: a reminder that actions taken in disregard of the people’s will often carry consequences. The gods are never asleep!
Yet, beyond the politics of the moment lies a greater opportunity. As the 2027 elections approach, and with the possibility of a bye-election, Abia South stands at a critical crossroads. This is a chance not only to correct the injustice of 2023, but also to rewrite a chapter that has long hindered the district’s progress.
That opportunity brings us back to Onyeizu. Chinedu Onyeizu remains a compelling choice, one tested, trusted, and forward-thinking. His performance during the 2023 elections demonstrated not just popularity, but a deep connection with the grassroots and a clear understanding of the needs of the people. He represents a blend of technical expertise, global exposure, and local relevance, qualities that are indispensable in today’s legislative environment. Youthful? Yes. It is an advantage.
The call, therefore, is clear: Let Abia South rise—united, resolute, and determined. Let the people speak again with one voice, this time ensuring that their mandate is not only expressed, but protected. The era of sit-tight representation that yields little or no benefit must come to an end. It is time to send a strong message: enough is enough.
Abia South cannot afford to lag behind while other senatorial districts move forward. The future demands bold choices, and the moment demands decisive action.
Onyeizu was the senator Abia South never had, but with unity, vigilance, and determination, he will surely become the senator Abia South truly deserves.
