The Oyo State government recently convened a consultative meeting with traditional rulers to discuss the revitalization of the State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Held at the House of Chiefs in the State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, the meeting aimed to enlist the support of traditional leaders in advancing the developmental agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration.

Led by Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, the state government delegation emphasized the importance of the council as co-partners in driving development initiatives. Lawal highlighted the need for a functional council to provide traditional rulers with a unified platform to voice their opinions on government policies, ultimately ensuring that the government feels their impact.

Key issues discussed included the rotation of chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions, as well as expanding the council’s membership to promote unity among traditional rulers. Lawal urged the obas to deliberate on whether to adhere to the 2011 gazette, which stipulated a rotational chairmanship basis among prominent traditional rulers.

Furthermore, Lawal encouraged the obas to provide unbiased suggestions and recommendations for the state’s overall development. He assured them that any proposals presented would be carefully considered and implemented by the government.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Segun Olayiwola, emphasized the importance of reconstituting the council in accordance with the provisions of the Chieftaincy Law of Oyo State. Olayiwola urged traditional rulers to prioritize unity, respect, and mutual understanding in the reconstitution process.
