The new leadership of the Radio Television Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), led by President Comrade Prince Emeka Kalu (Magic Fingers), recently visited the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) in Abuja. The purpose of the visit was to express gratitude and solidarity, particularly acknowledging the fatherly role played by BON’s Executive Secretary, Comrade Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose, during the electoral process that led to their current leadership.

‎During the visit, President Kalu praised Dr. Bamgbose for his humility, determination, transparency, and forthrightness. He acknowledged Dr. Bamgbose’s previous role as President of RATTAWU Nigeria and expressed appreciation for his contributions to the growth of the Union.

‎President Kalu assured Dr. Bamgbose that RATTAWU is eager to seek his guidance as they work to elevate the Union to greater heights. He emphasized the importance of establishing a critical partnership with BON, given its significant role in the broadcast industry, which includes promoting collaboration, advocacy, professional development, and setting standards for broadcasters across the country.

‎RATTAWU recognizes BON’s contributions towards promoting national unity, cultural preservation, and public enlightenment. In response, Executive Secretary Dr. Yemisi Bamgbose expressed gratitude for the visit and commended the new leadership for their proactive start.

‎He advised President Kalu to build upon the achievements of past leadership while forging a new path toward greater accomplishments. As the umbrella organization representing both private and public broadcast stations in Nigeria, BON remains committed to fostering partnerships with key stakeholders, RATTAWU included.

‎However, Dr. Bamgbose voiced concern about the serious challenges facing the broadcast industry in Nigeria, which, if unaddressed, could result in many organizations shutting down. He highlighted issues such as the high cost of broadcast equipment due to an unfavorable exchange rate, rising diesel prices, inconsistent electricity supply, and insufficient government funding as significant obstacles to the industry’s development.

‎To ensure the survival of the industry, government intervention is essential for both private and public broadcast stations. Comrade Dr. Bamgbose took the opportunity to appreciate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) for his commendable efforts and acknowledged the Minister of Information and National Orientation for his commitment to constructive engagement.

‎The visit concluded with an exchange of gifts, highlighting the importance of collaboration between RATTAWU and BON.
