Rotimi Amaechi: If Peter Obi Becomes President, He Won’t Steal

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has stirred fresh political conversation after making remarks about Peter Obi and the influence of presidential leadership on the conduct of government officials.

In a statement circulating online, Amaechi said he would not support Obi’s presidential ambition because he also wants to occupy Aso Rock, but acknowledged that Obi would not steal if elected president.

Amaechi was also quoted as saying that members of an Obi-led cabinet would equally be unlikely to steal, stressing that the disposition of a president can influence the conduct of those serving under him.

“If Peter Obi becomes president, he won’t steal and people in his cabinet won’t steal. The president’s body language matters, even though I don’t support him.”

The remarks have since generated reactions across political circles, particularly ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with attention returning to questions of leadership, accountability and the management of public resources.

Amaechi’s comments, as circulated, do not amount to an endorsement of Obi’s presidential bid; rather, they present his assessment of how a president’s personal conduct could shape the behaviour of appointees.

The remarks have continued to fuel debate over the role of personal integrity and institutional accountability in Nigeria’s political leadership.
