Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has attributed the deaths of over 30,000 people and widespread destruction of businesses in the South-East to the agitation led by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kalu expressed his concerns, stating that Kanu’s actions had devastating consequences, including the loss of lives and livelihoods. He recalled instances where traders, including his friend’s late mother, lost their businesses during the unrest.

Kalu, who alleged to have been involved in efforts to resolve the issue, urged for a political solution, emphasizing the need for calm and reason. He noted that he had discussed the matter with President Bola Tinubu and stressed that only the Attorney-General of the Federation has the authority to reverse the pronouncements against Kanu.
The senator’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate surrounding Kanu’s imprisonment and the impact of his agitation on the South-East region. As the situation remains uncertain, stakeholders are urging for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
