A recent interview on African Independent Television (AIT) program “Security Scope” highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. Sir Chikwe Udensi, a security consultant and Vice President of the International Security Association, emphasized that the country’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by the United States is a significant issue requiring immediate attention.
The CPC designation could lead to economic sanctions, reduced loans and aid, and other punitive measures. Sir Udensi clarified that this does not necessarily mean the U.S. will intervene militarily in Nigeria. “The process that would lead to a military intervention by America has not been initiated,” he said.

Sir Udensi urged the government to enhance its efforts to protect citizens, citing Donald Trump’s statements on the killings in Nigeria as a wake-up call. “This is not just about Christian genocide; it’s about the reality that Nigerians are dying in significant numbers. No responsible government should trivialise this situation or engage in political gamesmanship,” he asserted.
To address the security challenges, Sir Udensi recommended equipping security agencies with sophisticated technology and providing proper training and personnel retention. He also highlighted the need for improved welfare for security personnel to boost morale.
“The government should prioritize the security of its citizens and allocate the necessary resources to enable security agencies to perform their duties effectively,” Sir Udensi said. A holistic approach is essential to address the security challenges and ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.
The interview comes amid increasing violence in various regions, including recent attacks on farming communities in Benue and Plateau States. Sir Udensi’s call for action emphasizes that Nigeria’s security situation requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, and readiness to work with the US and other foreign partners to find a lasting solution, not grandstanding and unguarded utterances.
The government must adopt a proactive stance, providing security agencies with necessary resources, addressing root causes of conflict, and ensuring accountability for those responsible for violence. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, underscoring the need for concrete measures to address the security challenges.
Nigeria’s security challenge is complex and demands a comprehensive approach. The government must take immediate action to protect citizens, and the international community should support these efforts.
