A US-assisted rescue plan for the Chibok girls was aborted due to suspected leaks within the Nigerian military, according to former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi.

The plan, initiated by the Jonathan administration in 2014, involved a joint operation between American forces and Nigerian troops to rescue the girls abducted by Boko Haram.

‎The operation was called off after a reconnaissance aircraft discovered that Boko Haram fighters were wearing masks, indicating that the plan had been leaked to the insurgents. Akinyemi emphasized the need to identify and remove individuals within the Nigerian military sympathetic to Boko Haram or ISWAP.

‎The Chibok schoolgirls were abducted on April 14, 2014, with over 250 girls taken from a school in Borno State. While some girls have been rescued or released, many remain missing. The Nigerian government has reiterated its commitment to securing their release.
