“You cannot hold what happened in 1966 coup when I was barely three, four years against me” — Peter Obi

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to move beyond historical grievances and focus on building national unity and cohesion.

Obi made the call during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, while responding to questions about the 1966 military coup and its lingering impact on Nigeria’s political discourse.

The coup, led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu and other young military officers, resulted in the deaths of several prominent political and military figures, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Obi says he cannot be blamed for events from his childhood

Addressing attempts to link him to the political consequences of the period, Obi pointed to his age at the time, noting that he was only a young child when the events occurred.

“You cannot hold what happened when I was barely three, four years against me. That’s in the past now,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria must avoid allowing historical conflicts to continue dividing its citizens, urging Nigerians to focus on reconciliation and the future.

“It is time to show love”

Obi stressed that national development requires citizens to move away from hatred and division and embrace unity.

“But we must build the future based on love, not on hatred. So it is time to show love. It is time to show unity,” he noted.

He further reaffirmed that national cohesion remains a central pillar of his political agenda.

“That’s why my presidency is about unity of the country, and it’s important that people understand that,” he added.

Obi’s remarks come amid renewed discussions about the legacy of the 1966 coup and the extent to which historical events continue to influence Nigeria’s political relationships and national identity.
