The annual Eluama Iriji and Cultural Festival took place yesterday at the Eluama Civic Center in Nunya/Ogboro Isukwuato LGA, Abia State. This cherished tradition, which symbolizes gratitude, renewal, and unity, gained special significance this year with the invitation of the Bende Born Billionaire, distinguished philanthropist and politician, Chief Dr. Emeka Charles Kalu, President of E.C.K Foundation.
Celebrated across many communities in Igboland, the festival marks the harvest of the new yam crop and is deeply rooted in cultural heritage. It is a day of feasting, reflection, thanksgiving to God and the ancestors, and reaffirmation of communal ties. It is believed across Igbo land that the growth of Yams after planting them is a sign of renewal of life which must be celebrated as appreciation to God.

This year’s Nkari Iriji Lecture was themed “Eluoma – Our Promised Land,” drawing parallels with the biblical “Promised Land” of the Jews. The concept of “Promised Land” can be summarized by the biblical phrase, “A Land Flowing with Milk and Honey.”
The presence of Chief Kalu, renowned for his significant contributions to human development and social empowerment, added glamour and weight to the occasion. His impressive track record in philanthropy includes educational scholarships, healthcare outreach, and youth empowerment programs, making his invitation both symbolic and inspiring.
In his remarks, Chief Kalu expressed heartfelt gratitude to the traditional rulers, elders, and the entire community for the honor. He emphasized that the New Yam Festival is not only about celebrating the harvest but also serves as a reminder of unity, resilience, and the value of hard work. He pledged his continued commitment to supporting initiatives that uplift the community and generously donated the sum of N500,000 naira (five hundred thousand naira).

The day was filled with cultural displays, traditional dances, masquerade performances, and communal feasting. The event successfully blended heritage and modern leadership, demonstrating how tradition and progress can coexist harmoniously.
By welcoming Chief Kalu, the community not only celebrated its harvest but also reaffirmed its connection with leaders who embody service, generosity, and vision.
