In the 2023 general elections, a number of politicians in Abia State, many of whom lacked strong grassroots appeal or credible electoral track records, rode to victory on the back of the widespread popularity of Peter Obi. This phenomenon, widely referred to as the “Obi Wave,” became a decisive factor, reshaping electoral outcomes across the state and beyond. Candidates who would ordinarily have struggled to secure victory found themselves beneficiaries of a powerful movement driven by hope, public sentiment, and a desire for change.

Regrettably, not long after securing their mandates, some of these beneficiaries distanced themselves from the very movement and figure that made their electoral success possible. This pattern has raised serious concerns about political opportunism and the lack of ideological consistency among certain officeholders.
Today, a similar scenario appears to be unfolding. The Abia South Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who has spent nearly two decades in the Senate, is once again repositioning himself politically. With growing indications that his return to the Senate in 2027 may face stiff resistance from constituents, he seems to be turning towards Peter Obi, in what many interpret as an attempt to once again ride on another wave of popularity to secure electoral advantage. This is not without precedent. In previous election cycles, Abaribe was perceived to have aligned himself with influential figures and movements, including leveraging the influence of Nnamdi Kanu, to maintain political relevance and electoral viability.
Such recurring patterns call for vigilance. Supporters of Peter Obi, and indeed all voters who desire principled leadership, must carefully assess the intentions of political actors seeking alignment. Popular movements should not become convenient vehicles for individuals whose commitments may be driven more by personal ambition than by genuine belief in the ideals they profess.
Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the electorate to distinguish between authentic partnership and opportunistic alignment. Political credibility should be built on consistency, service, and integrity, not merely on the ability to tap into the popularity of others at critical moments.
