In Nigeria’s political landscape, women have historically faced limited access to leadership positions, despite constituting a significant portion of the population. Structural barriers, cultural norms, and party dynamics have often constrained their participation in governance and decision-making processes. However, available evidence consistently shows that when women are given the opportunity to serve, they deliver impactful and measurable results across sectors.
Nigeria has witnessed remarkable contributions from distinguished female leaders whose legacies continue to shape national development. Notable among them is Dora Akunyili, whose reforms at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control restored public confidence in drug safety. Similarly, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has earned global recognition for her economic expertise and leadership, becoming the first African and first woman to head the World Trade Organization.

Other prominent examples include Oby Ezekwesili, known for her advocacy in transparency and accountability; Amina Mohammed, who has played a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development globally; Stella Oduah; Diezani Alison-Madueke, the first female president of OPEC; and Hadiza Bala Usman, recognized for institutional reforms in port administration.
At the subnational level, leaders such as Kadaria Ahmed and Funke Opeke have also demonstrated the breadth of women’s contributions to governance, policy discourse, and economic growth.
Against this backdrop, emerging female figures are stepping forward to reshape representation at the grassroots and federal levels. One such figure is Dr. Martina Amarachi Ononiwu, popularly known as Martina Martins, who is positioning herself as a catalyst for inclusive development in the Ikwuano/Umuahia North & South Federal Constituency.
Her growing visibility reflects a broader shift in Nigeria’s political space, where more women are asserting their capacity to lead, influence policy, and drive community-focused initiatives. By embracing leadership and actively engaging in the political process, Dr. Ononiwu represents a new generation of women determined to bridge the gender gap in governance and deliver tangible progress to their constituencies.
As conversations around inclusivity and representation continue to gain momentum, the role of women in Nigeria’s leadership architecture remains not only relevant but essential for sustainable national development.
The people of Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency are therefore, called upon to make the right choice of giving her the opportunity to represent them at the National Assembly. The possibility also rests with the leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) who are expected to create a level playing ground for all as the primaries approach to choose flag bearers for the ruling party in 2027.
