In a major political realignment, Hon. Chief Daniel Okeke, PhD—the 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency and the appointed Campaign Council Leader for Honourable Ikenna Ukwa under the APC—has officially defected to the Labour Party (LP).
Chief Okeke’s defection comes as a significant boost to the ruling party in Abia State, as he announced his commitment to throw his full political weight behind supporting all Labour Party candidates across the Abia North senatorial district.

Describing his decision as a deliberate step towards fostering progressive governance, Chief Okeke highlighted that political platforms must serve as instruments for sustainable development, accountability, and the overall interest of the people rather than partisan sentiment.
Alignment with Governor Alex Otti’s Vision
Explaining the rationale behind his move, Chief Okeke commended the transformative efforts of Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s administration, noting its focus on infrastructure renewal, institutional reforms, and economic advancement across Abia State.
“I have carefully observed the direction of governance in Abia State, and I believe there is a compelling need for every well-meaning Abian to contribute to the process of rebuilding our state,” Chief Okeke stated. “Governor Alex Otti has demonstrated a willingness to confront difficult challenges, pursue reforms, and place greater emphasis on accountability and institutional renewal. At this critical stage of our development, the collective interest of Abia State must take precedence over partisan considerations.”
Chief Okeke clarified that his immediate priority in joining the Labour Party is not to declare an ambition for elective office, but to work alongside other progressive stakeholders, mobilize support for LP candidates in Abia North, and foster community-driven growth.
He reaffirmed his dedication to his political network, Team Progressive, as well as the Mezie and Agnes Foundation, calling on his supporters and associates across Arochukwu, Ohafia, and Abia North to embrace this new direction with unity, maturity, and a shared commitment to service.
Chief Okeke expressed appreciation to his former party members and colleagues—including Hon. Ikenna Ukwa—acknowledging the shared experiences and lessons gained during his time with the party. He stressed that his decision was not driven by personal animosity, but by his present conviction on how best to serve the people of Abia State.
He urged political stakeholders across the state to rise above divisive rhetoric and focus on policies that empower youth, attract private investment, and improve public infrastructure.
The defection of Chief Daniel Okeke, a major campaign heavy-weight in Abia North, signals a strategic shift in the region’s political landscape as the Labour Party continues to consolidate its footing in the state.
