As Nigerians mark the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary today, October 1, 2026, Abia State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, has called for renewed patriotism, unity and collective commitment to building a better Nigeria.
Emetu, in his Independence Day message made available by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Cyril Chukwudi Eke Mba, reflected on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, acknowledging the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers and the resilience of Nigerians through the years.

The Deputy Governor said Nigeria’s diversity remains one of the country’s greatest assets, urging citizens to see their ethnic, religious and political differences as part of the nation’s strength rather than reasons for division.
He called for greater respect, inclusiveness and peaceful coexistence, stressing that the responsibility of building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria rests not only with government but also with citizens and other stakeholders.
Emetu also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and committed to the development of their communities, noting that meaningful national progress begins with active participation at the grassroots.

Turning specifically to Abia, the Deputy Governor assured the people that the administration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti remains focused on policies and programmes aimed at improving citizens’ welfare and creating opportunities for sustainable development.
He encouraged Abians to continue supporting the ongoing transformation efforts of the Otti administration, while maintaining peace, unity and respect for the law.
As the Independence celebrations continue this evening, Emetu extended warm greetings to Abians and Nigerians at home and abroad, urging citizens to take pride in the country and remain committed to building a brighter future for present and coming generations.
According to the statement by his CPS, Sir Cyril Chukwudi Eke Mba, the Deputy Governor’s message was centred on renewed patriotism, national unity and the need for Nigerians to turn the country’s diversity into a source of strength as the nation moves forward.
