Awards ₦120m in Damages

A High Court in Nairobi, Kenya, has ruled that the 2021 abduction and forced rendition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was unlawful and unconstitutional.

The court declared that both the Kenyan and Nigerian governments grossly violated Kanu’s fundamental human rights.

The court found that Kanu’s abduction, detention, and transfer to Nigeria without due process breached international and domestic human rights standards. As a result, the Kenyan government has been ordered to pay Kanu 10 million Kenyan shillings, approximately ₦120 million, in damages for violating his constitutional rights.

The court declared that the abduction and subsequent forcible removal of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria was in violation of the laws of Kenya and his rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of movement and security of person.

This landmark judgment highlights the Kenyan court’s commitment to upholding human rights and the rule of law.
