In a remarkable demonstration of compassion and people-oriented service, the Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has commissioned and handed over 35 “Dignity Homes” to indigent widows across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of vulnerable citizens.
The initiative, which was carried out in celebration of Governor Alex Otti’s third anniversary in office, provided decent housing to 35 widows, many of whom had reportedly lived in extreme hardship and poor living conditions for years.

The official commissioning and symbolic handover took place at Umuhute, Ahiake Ndume in Umuahia, which served as the central commissioning point for the statewide humanitarian intervention driven by the Office of the Wife of the Governor.
Speaking during the event, Mrs. Otti described the project as more than just a housing intervention, stressing that it was designed to restore dignity, stability, and hope to widows who had long endured deprivation.
According to her, “For a widow, a home means stability, dignity, and restored hope,” emphasizing that the gesture was intended to give vulnerable women a renewed sense of belonging and security.
Beyond providing shelter, Mrs. Otti disclosed that beneficiaries also received cash assistance and food support to help them meet immediate needs, while plans for sustainable livelihood programmes are expected to be introduced to ensure long-term economic empowerment.
She expressed deep appreciation to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for his unwavering support and commitment to people-centred governance, noting that his administration has remained focused on policies that directly impact the lives of ordinary citizens.

Mrs. Otti also commended the Special Adviser to the Governor on Policies and Interventions, Dr. Christian Uche Anokwuru, for coordinating the project, alongside the Ministry of Women Affairs under the leadership of Dr. (Mrs.) Maureen Aghukwa, local contractors, and other stakeholders whose contributions ensured the successful delivery of the homes.
She reaffirmed that the Abia State Government, under Governor Otti’s leadership, would continue to expand social intervention programmes aimed at supporting widows, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups across the state.
The Dignity Homes initiative has been widely viewed as a significant milestone in Abia’s social welfare efforts, symbolising a renewed commitment to uplifting disadvantaged citizens and providing practical support to those in need.
Mrs. Otti attributed the success of the project to divine grace, giving glory to God for making the intervention possible and expressing optimism that more life-changing programmes would continue to touch communities across Abia State.
