The senatorial campaign of Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex, MFR, OON, has received a major boost following the adoption of his candidacy by the leadership of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) across the five Local Government Areas of Abia North Senatorial District.
The workers also inaugurated a dedicated campaign structure designed to mobilise support for the Labour Party candidate ahead of the 2027 senatorial election, adding a new layer to the growing grassroots activities around the Bourdex campaign.
The development followed an interactive meeting held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in Umuahia, which brought together NULGE leaders from Arochukwu, Bende, Isuikwuato, Ohafia and Umunneochi Local Government Areas for discussions with Bourdex.
In what the workers described as a strategic mobilisation initiative, NULGE constituted itself into an “Extra Ward” in each of the five LGAs, with a 20-member executive in each local government area. The structures are expected to drive grassroots mobilisation for the Bourdex senatorial project.
Speaking for the workers, the NULGE Chairman in Ohafia LGA, Comrade Ojisi Orji, praised Bourdex’s leadership qualities, character, commitment to excellence and record during his tenure as Transition Committee Chairman of Ohafia Local Government Area.
Ojisi recalled that when Bourdex assumed office, workers took him around the council headquarters and showed him the poor state of infrastructure arising from years of neglect.
According to him, Bourdex responded by ensuring that reconstruction work commenced through the appropriate Local Government channels rather than allowing administrative processes to delay the required intervention.
He further said Bourdex personally monitored the projects and remained committed to their completion even after the dissolution of the Transition Committee.
“Today, Ohafia Local Government headquarters wears a completely different look and provides a far more conducive and workers-friendly environment,” Ojisi said, according to the report.
The NULGE chairman also highlighted Bourdex’s attention to workers’ welfare, particularly the completion of the NULGE Secretariat building, which he said had previously not received the required attention.
The NULGE Chairman in Bende LGA, Comrade Amadi Onwuka, also declared support for Bourdex, describing him as a credible pathway towards a new direction for Abia North.
Onwuka assured that the workers would go beyond merely endorsing the Labour Party candidate, pledging to mobilise their members, families, friends and supporters for the senatorial project.
His counterparts in Isuikwuato, Umunneochi and Arochukwu — Comrades Ikechukwu Ijioma, Ajala Kingsley and Uyor Enyinnaya respectively — aligned themselves with the position, reaffirming the commitment of Local Government workers across the five LGAs to the Bourdex project.
The endorsements further strengthen the grassroots dimension of Bourdex’s campaign as the 2027 election approaches.
Responding to the workers, Bourdex described their endorsement as both an honour and a responsibility, thanking them for finding him worthy of their confidence.
He told the NULGE leaders that their confidence must be matched by his continued commitment to integrity, accountability, performance and service, while insisting that the senatorial contest should be determined by ideas, vision, capacity, character and verifiable records.
Bourdex said Abia North needs a senator who would regard public office as an avenue to serve rather than an opportunity for personal enrichment.
He also challenged the electorate to examine the records of all candidates seeking their mandate and assess what each has accomplished with opportunities previously entrusted to them.
Addressing questions around empowerment, the Labour Party candidate pointed to his business experience, particularly Bourdex Telecommunications, describing it as an indigenous telecommunications enterprise that created employment and connected businesses and communities.
He argued that genuine empowerment should go beyond the distribution of items at political gatherings to include building systems through which people can work, trade, earn income, employ others and improve their families’ livelihoods.
Bourdex said that philosophy guided his activities in business and public service and would remain central to his approach if entrusted with the mandate to represent Abia North in the Senate.
The Labour Party candidate also linked his senatorial ambition to the development trajectory under Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, arguing that the state’s transformation requires effective collaboration between the State Government and representatives at the National Assembly.
According to Bourdex, Governor Otti should not be expected to carry the responsibility of rebuilding Abia alone.
He said Abia North needs representatives who understand the Governor’s development vision and can complement it at the Federal level by attracting interventions, investment and opportunities to the district.
While welcoming the new NULGE structure, Bourdex cautioned that the significance of the initiative would ultimately depend on the strength of its grassroots mobilisation rather than the inauguration alone.
He urged the newly inaugurated executives to mobilise peacefully and lawfully, engage their colleagues with facts and conviction, and promote politics based on truth, ideas, records and vision rather than insults or bitterness.
The meeting culminated in the formal inauguration of the NULGE “Extra Ward” Campaign Structure, with executives drawn from the five Local Government Areas and tasked with mobilising Local Government workers and their communities in support of Bourdex and the broader Labour Party agenda.
The event was attended by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade, Commerce and Industry, Chief Nwaka Inem; Chairman of the Bourdex Campaign Council, Engr. Harrison Onuke; Director-General, Team Bourdex, Hon. Ndukwo Ojukwu; Secretary-General, Team Bourdex, Hon. Peter Ogbuji; Head of Media, Hon. Dimgba Ejieke, alongside NULGE executives and other stakeholders from across Abia North.
The development represents another notable mobilisation point for the Bourdex campaign, with the Labour Party candidate insisting that the ultimate test is not the number of endorsements received, but the ability to translate political support into peaceful and effective grassroots engagement.
“A NEW ABIA NORTH IS POSSIBLE,” Bourdex declared.
