The Federal Government, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Abia State Government, has launched Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), in Abia State.

In a deataled press release by Ctz. Ukoha, Njoku Ukoha Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, the landmark initiative is designed to strengthen innovation, research commercialisation, entrepreneurship and industrial development, while positioning universities as drivers of economic growth and job creation.
Speaking at the inauguration, Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to repositioning higher education as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, research, commercialisation and employment generation.
He described the project as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s future, stressing that universities must move beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become centres for enterprise development, technology transfer and industrial competitiveness.
Delivering the keynote address titled Science Meets Enterprise, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said the decision to site the country’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod in Abia reflects the confidence reposed in the state by the Federal Government and the UNDP as a growing centre for economic prosperity and industrial advancement.

Governor Otti said the project aligns with his administration’s economic development agenda, which prioritises industrialisation, innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable job creation.
According to him, the launch of the UniPod is expected to redefine academic research by encouraging universities and researchers to focus on practical innovations capable of solving real-life challenges rather than pursuing publications solely for career advancement.
“With the launch of the UniPod, a new interest in qualitative research will develop as scientists, students and everyone connected to the university ecosystem begin to look beyond random and hurried publication of academic papers just to score points for the next promotion cycle. The expectation is that research efforts henceforth will be directed at answering questions with practical, everyday applications,” Governor Otti said.
The governor expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, TETFund and the UNDP for their collaboration in bringing the project to fruition, describing them as dependable development partners.
He noted that the state has continued to deepen its partnership with the organisations over the past three years through several joint initiatives focused on entrepreneurship development, youth empowerment, job creation and expanding economic opportunities for women and young people.
Also speaking, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, praised Governor Otti for his commitment to education and development.

She described her visit to Abia as a homecoming and said the UniPod represents the United Nations’ practical commitment to improving lives through impactful development initiatives.
Mrs Eziakonwa commended the governor for transforming the state’s education sector and changing the development narrative of Abia over the past three years.
She also appreciated Governor Otti for personally delivering a congratulatory letter following her recent elevation within the United Nations system.
The UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Elsie Attafuah, said the launch forms part of a broader national innovation ecosystem being developed across Nigeria through the UniPod initiative.
She explained that the programme is designed to integrate education, research, innovation, enterprise and manufacturing, enabling universities to become engines of economic transformation and global competitiveness.
Ms Attafuah commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund and the Abia State Government for supporting innovation-driven development.
She also applauded Governor Otti’s vision of transforming Abia into Nigeria’s leading manufacturing and industrial innovation hub.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ursula Akanwa, described the commissioning as a defining moment in the institution’s history.
Professor Akanwa said the project fulfils the university’s mandate of deploying science, technology and innovation to advance agriculture, manufacturing and enterprise development.
She thanked the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Education, UNDP, TETFund and the Abia State Government for selecting MOUAU to host Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology UniPod.
The inauguration attracted top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribole, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Caleb Ajagba, members of the Abia State Executive Council, traditional rulers and other key stakeholders.
The Manu-Tech UniPod is expected to provide students, researchers and entrepreneurs with access to advanced manufacturing equipment, prototyping facilities, innovation support systems and industry mentorship, enabling them to transform research findings and innovative ideas into commercially viable products while accelerating Nigeria’s industrial growth and competitiveness.
