Tragic Boat Capsizing in Lagos: Death Toll Rises as Search Continues

Following a boat crash in Ikorodu, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) retrieved an additional corpse from the scene. LASWA spokeswoman, Wuraola Alake, provided updates on the incident, stating that the submerged boat was also recovered.

Alake shed light on the ongoing investigation into the cause of the capsizing, refuting claims of boat racing. She highlighted discrepancies in passenger manifest filing, with some passengers only completing forms after rescue.

Of the 11 passengers rescued, nine filled out manifests at the Ibeshe ferry terminal, while two refused to provide details. The recovered casualties were handed over to the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and the State Environmental Health Management Unit (SEHMU).

The capsizing occurred around 7:17 p.m. along the Ibeshe-Ikorodu channel, with the boat departing from Addax jetty, Lagos. Earlier reports indicated the recovery of three casualties and the rescue of 11 passengers, with search and rescue efforts ongoing.
