Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has taken a bold stance on the upcoming local government elections, declaring that they will proceed as scheduled despite the police’s attempts to stop them.
Fubara accused the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of bias towards the election and insisted that nothing will prevent the polls from holding.
The governor’s defiance comes after the Rivers State Police Command vowed not to allow the election to take place, citing a restraining order and a federal high court judgment.
However, Fubara argued that the court ruling only prevents the police from providing security, not from holding the election itself.
Fubara visited the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Thursday night, after receiving reports of alleged police interference in the electoral process.
He declared, “You don’t have any power whatsoever to bar me from entering. Try it and part of your history as a wicked IGP would include shooting Fubara”
The governor’s statement was met with support from angry Rivers State citizens, who stormed the RSIEC office demanding that the election be held. Fubara’s stance is clear: “The election will hold. Anything that wants to happen, let it happen”.
