The Governor Alex Chioma Otti-led administration recorded a significant political boost on Saturday as high-profile defectors formally joined the Labour Party in Acha, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
Representing the Governor at the event, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu led top government officials and party leaders to receive the new entrants, describing the development as a defining moment in the state’s political evolution.

Addressing the gathering, Engr Emetu said the increasing wave of defections into the Labour Party reflects growing public confidence in the current administration. He noted that the movement signaled more than political alignment, emphasizing that the new members had embraced a governance vision anchored on integrity, accountability, and people-focused leadership.
According to him, the future of Abia State depends on collective participation, urging the defectors and party faithful to contribute actively to the state’s ongoing transformation. He described Acha as a rising symbol of unity and political consciousness within the state.
State Chairman of the Labour Party, Peter Azubuike, commended the defectors for their decision and disclosed that the reception was carried out on the directive of the Governor, underscoring the strategic importance of Isuikwuato in the party’s expansion drive.

Azubuike assured the new members of equal status within the party, stressing that the Labour Party operates an inclusive system without discrimination. He added that the influx of prominent figures has significantly weakened opposition structures in the area, positioning the party as a dominant political force.
Also speaking, the Leader of Leaders in Isuikwuato, Ken Ahia, praised Governor Otti’s leadership and urged sustained support for the administration. Similarly, the lawmaker representing Isuikwuato State Constituency, Lucky Johnson, pointed to ongoing developmental projects as justification for the growing support base.
The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Salome Nkemakolam Obiukwu, described the occasion as a step toward overwhelming electoral success in 2027, attributing the party’s growing appeal to the administration’s performance.

Welcoming attendees, the Isuikwuato Labour Party Chairman, Harrison Onuke, highlighted the calibre of the defectors as evidence of the Governor’s impactful governance and reaffirmed the LGA’s support for the party.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Obinna Ekekwe and Chief Chris Aja said their decision to join the Labour Party was voluntary and based on what they described as visible achievements of the Otti administration. They pledged to work with party members to secure future electoral victories.
A major highlight of the event was the symbolic presentation of the Labour Party flag to the defectors by the Deputy Governor, marking their formal integration into the party.
The event drew a large crowd of stakeholders, including political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy, and party supporters, and witnessed the defection of several political heavyweights, former office holders, and grassroots mobilizers from opposition parties into the Labour Party.
