The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has called on former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the interest of Ndigbo.
In a strongly worded press release issued on May 5, 2026, the group expressed concerns that Obi’s current political trajectory may jeopardize both his chances and the broader interests of the Igbo nation. Ohanaeze argued that his reported defection to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lacks the structural strength required to secure victory against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which it described as politically formidable.

The organization further warned that Obi’s presidential ambition has already contributed to weakening opposition unity. According to the statement, his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) risks splitting opposition votes, particularly with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expected to emerge as a key contender under the ADC platform. Such division, Ohanaeze noted, could ultimately pave the way for President Tinubu’s re-election and deepen the dominance of the APC.
Highlighting potential consequences, Ohanaeze cautioned that a failed presidential bid by Obi could have far-reaching political and economic implications for Ndigbo. It warned of possible threats to Igbo investments in major cities such as Lagos and Abuja, setbacks in the quest for an additional South-East state, and disruptions to ongoing federal projects in the region.
The group also raised concerns about the long-term political future of the Igbo people, noting that prospects for producing a vice president by 2031 or a president by 2035 could be significantly undermined. It stressed that continued political fragmentation may further erode the region’s influence at the national level.
Describing its position as a “clarion call,” Ohanaeze urged Obi to prioritize collective regional interests over personal ambition. It maintained that strategic political alignment at this stage would better serve the long-term aspirations of Ndigbo.
The statement was jointly signed by Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and National Spokesman, Chief Thompson Ohia.
